On any given evening, Ewing receives emails informing him that some fan in a far-flung location – say, Los Angeles – has just invested in his tiny Scottish soccer club, the Caledonian Braves. “A community club, most people would think, is a local community bound by a certain geography,” says Ewing. National Basketball Association/Courtesy Caledonian BravesAgainst this backdrop, fan ownership has emerged as somewhat of a utopian panacea for some fans. As time went by, the academy’s first team started playing in the Scottish soccer leagues and separated to form the Caledonian Braves in 2019. “You can be anyone really from anywhere and you can also own a football club for as little as £10 ($13).”

LOS ANGELES – Apple Original Films is a new player on the Academy Award scene, but it's already left an indelible — and historic — mark. With acclaimed director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" opening just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Apple is making another push for Academy Award glory. Heading into November, the Academy Awards race appeared to be dominated by Warner Bros. ' "Barbie" and Universal's "Oppenheimer." Warner Bros. and Legendary Studio's "Dune: Part Two" won't be part of this year's Oscar race after departing to March of next year. Now, in the last few weeks of the year, Academy Award hopefuls are arriving en masse.

CNN —Retired Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton experienced a “scary setback” in her fight against a rare form of pneumonia this week, after showing remarkable progress towards recovery just days ago, her daughter said Wednesday night. Retton is still in the intensive care unit and is “really exhausted” after the setback, her daughter Shayla Kelley Schrepfer said in a video posted to Instagram. We were so excited, seeing so much progress, and then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback,” Schrepfer said. Earlier in the week, Schrepfer said that although 55-year-old Retton still needed intensive care, her breathing was becoming stronger, and she no longer had to rely so heavily on machines. The family did not specify the type of rare pneumonia her mother is diagnosed with.

CNN —Mary Lou Retton is making “remarkable” progress, according to her daughter McKenna Kelley’s Instagram on Saturday, after a “very rare form of pneumonia” had left the retired Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast “fighting for her life.”“Prayers have been felt and are being answered,” read the Instagram post. Retton remained in a hospital intensive care unit, Kelley stated, but the 55-year-old’s “path to recovery is steadily progressing.”“Her fighting spirit is truly shining!” the post added. She’s responding so well to treatments,” Saturday’s Instagram post said. Retton became a household name during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles – winning five medals, more than any other athlete at those Games. Her status as an all-time great was solidified when Retton scored perfect scores on the vault and floor routine en route to becoming the first US woman to earn an Olympic gold in the individual all-around event.

Despite placing her previous documentaries and concert films on streaming services in the past, the iconic pop star opted to deliver her Eras Tour film directly to cinemagoers this October. Of course, the theater company will generate significantly more than that in concession sales, perhaps the real upside to Swift's film release. "Taylor Swift, being a cultural powerhouse and shaper of new business models, may have a hand in bringing back the old-school style concert film." Swift's concert film seems destined to overtake the current record holder for a theatrical concert film. Miley Cyrus' "Best of Both Worlds" concert film tallied $31.1 million during its opening weekend back in 2008, appearing in around 680 locations.

As two Hollywood strikes rage on, movie writers and stars aren't permitted to hype their projects, due to strike rules. The longer the work stoppages keep going, the more likely it is studios will delay releases as production shutdowns choke the movie release pipeline. "Dune: Part Two," a science fiction epic based on Frank Herbert's seminal novel, could end up the biggest title to move. Warner Bros. didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. While the Writers Guild of America has returned to the bargaining table with producers, negotiations are moving slowly.

Migrant surge expectedThe surge of migrants is expected because Title 42, the Trump-era policy that allowed the government to quickly turn away certain migrants at the border during the Covid-19 pandemic, is expiring. These deployments are not unprecedented in recent years, but this one is notable since it coincides with an expected surge of border encounters. Biden administration’s plan to discourage border crossingsThe administration has tried to discourage migrants from simply crossing the border and promised that people apprehended will be turned away and potentially barred from reentry. LOS ANGELES – While shareholders will still be keyed in to see how many subscribers Disney's suite of streaming services added during the fiscal first-quarter report, the focus of Wednesday's earnings will be the return of CEO Bob Iger. This is Iger's first earnings call since early 2020, and his words will set the tone for the future of the media company. As part of that warning, the company noted that its Disney+ platform may see a tapering of growth going forward. In November, the company reported $1.5 billion in operating losses at its direct-to-consumer unit, which includes its streaming services. As for subscriber growth, analysts predict the total Disney+ user pool will be 161.1 million, a loss of around 3 million compared to the previous quarter.
Costco plans to open its first location in South Los Angeles – and it will be on the bottom floor of an apartment building. This is the current entrance to the property. It is located in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of LA. Samantha DelouyaOn Monday, Thrive Living, a New York-based developer, announced its plan for an 800-unit rental apartment unit anchored by a new Costco location. LOS ANGELES – Albert Pujols hit the 700th home run of his career Friday night, becoming the fourth player in major league history—and the first from the Dominican Republic—to reach that mark, joining Barry Bonds, Henry Aaron and Babe Ruth. In the fourth inning, with many at Dodger Stadium standing, a sea of blue dotted with St. Louis Cardinals red, Pujols homered into the left field bleachers against Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Phil Bickford. He spread his arms wide as he rounded first base, as the fans stood and cheered the accomplishment as though he were one of their own. Pujols played five months for the Dodgers last season.
